Topics Crucial for Cracking JEE

Acing the JEE exam largely boils down to your preparation, hard work and proper usage of your time. Determining your approach to this exam is crucial. You need to study smart and make the full use of your time. Here are some of the topics in decreasing order, based on the weightage of their questions in the past few years of JEE papers-

PHYSICS –

  • Mechanics – the bulk of JEE physics paper is mostly from mechanics. Any JEE level mechanics problem can be solved by a combination of one or more of these: Newton’s laws, Work energy theorem, Law of conservation of energy, Law of conservation of momentum (linear/angular), Equation of continuity and Bernoulli’s theorem.
  • Electricity and Magnetism – Coulomb’s Law and Capacitance are very essential. Use Kirchhoff’s laws, series parallel reduction and such tricks.
  • Thermal Physics and Elasticity – internal energy and heat calculations are useful. Elasticity is also a very important chapter.
  • Fluids and Waves and Sound – Doppler effect is common
  • Potentiometer Related Questions
  • Optics – some of the easiest chapters!
  • Modern Physics – Mostly theoretical, with a few basic formulas

CHEMISTRY –

  • Physical Chemistry – Topics like mole concept, atomic structure are generally asked a lot in physical part of chemistry.
  • Organic Chemistry – General Organic Chemistry portion contains electrophiles, nucleophiles, types of reaction, acidity, basicity, etc. There are generally various name reactions in chemistry which need to be prepared with care. It helps in solving many questions of organic synthesis.
  • Inorganic Chemistry – All of IOC is of equal importance! It’s crucial to know the preparation methods, reactions and uses of various compounds. Good knowledge of the periodic table will help you go a long way (ionization potential, atomic radius, electronegativity, electron affinity, the electrode potential)

MATHEMATICS –

Practice is key in maths! It all depends on speed and accuracy. The mathematics syllabus for JEE broadly consists of the following topics:

  • Trigonometry
  • Algebra
  • Differential Calculus
  • Integral Calculus
  • Co-ordinate Geometry
  • Vectors

Other topics of utmost importance include

  • Calculus (functions, limits, continuity, differentiability, differentiation, application of derivatives, integration, definite integrals and differential equations)
  • Coordinate Geometry
  • Vectors and 3D Geometry (It’s primarily easy-breezy because JEE contains numerous problems pertaining to vectors that require standard formulae)
  • Algebra (most students struggle with the chapters on permutations and combinations and complex numbers)
  • Trigonometry (Very few questions are purely based on trigonometry, but there are always questions that involve standard trigonometric identities.)

It’s always impossible to guess the exact breakdown of all the questions, so it’s essential all chapters are on your fingertips! Study hard, and best of luck!
